Gary was born in Pincher Creek, Alberta on July 8, 1945. He was named Orville Gary Cox, as he was the second son of a second son. His father Orville was also a second son, and Gary was the seventh in line with the same name.

He married Shirley Walks in 1976 and they were later divorced. Shirley had two children, Landon and Camille.

In 1990, Gary married Marty Flynn. They live in the Nass Valley outside of Terrace, B.C.
